Recipe: Salted Caramel Apple Crumble

This is a classic pudding for this time of year, the spiced apples and the crispy, slightly gooey topping make it the ultimate comfort food – especially when served up with ice cream! We’ve given the traditional recipe a sweet ‘n’ salty twist… 

You Will Need:

For The Crumble

  • 1 or 2 large Bramley apples
  • 180g flour
  • 60g caster sugar
  • 110g butter (chopped in to small chunks)
  • sea salt

For The Caramel Sauce

  • 120g butter
  • 120g brown sugar
  • 100ml cream

Step One
Preheat the oven to 180C and grease a medium-sized casserole dish.

Step Two
Core and peel the apples and slice them in to medium-sized slices. Use a vegetable steamer to lightly steam them, or boil them in water until almost cooked through. We went for Bramley apples as they work with with the sweetness of the caramel sauce. 

Step Three
Add the flour and butter to a large bowl and rub with clean hands, working the butter in to the flour until it looks a bit like crumbled cheese. Keep going until all the mixture is combined. Next, add in the sugar and stir well. Leave to one side. 

Step Four
In a small saucepan over low heat, add the ingredients for the caramel sauce and stir all the time. Once it starts to boil, take it off the heat.  


Step Five
Place a layer of apple slices in the casserole dish and cover with a small amount of caramel sauce, before sprinkling over some sea salt. Add another layer of apple, then caramel sauce and salt – keep doing this until you’re all out.

Step Six
Layer on the crumble mix, scooping on a generous amount before adding a little more caramel sauce to the top. Finally, sprinkle on a touch of salt. 

Step Seven
Place the dish in to the oven for 20-25minutes, until the top is cripsy, golden and bubbling. 

Serve up with a big dollop of whipped cream, custard or ice cream!
