When facing less than perfect skin, it can be a mission to find great skincare within a reasonable budget. We’ve been there, and the result is a pretty solid skincare routine that clears up blemishes and keeps future breakouts at bay, without the huge costs…
SUPER FACIALIST TEA FLOWER PURIFYING CLEANSING WASH, £7.99
The Super Facialist ‘Tea Flower’ range (found in the aisles of Boots) is a great place to start if you have troublesome skin, the products are of high quality and are really effective.
While we wouldn’t usually recommend a foaming cleanser as they can be stripping on the skin, when used alongside a creamy cleanser and used sparingly throughout the week, they can make a huge difference to the overall condition of skin. This cleansing wash will slough away dead skin cells and other impurities clogging the pores, leading to breakouts. It will brighten and balance the skin and help the overall health of the complexion – and it’s formulated without the addition of unnecessary, nasty ingredients.
We found this was best when used alongside a creamier cleanser, as it can be slightly drying when used regularly. The best way to do this is to use a balm or cream cleanser to remove makeup, and follow with another lighter cleanser like this wash.
The moisturiser and mask in the range are also great budget buys.
MARIO BADESCU SPECIAL CUCUMBER LOTION, £14.95
Freshen up the skin with this toning lotion, it uses ingredients known for their healing properties, and the large bottle should last you some time – making it more economical in the long-run.
We’ve been impressed by every product we’ve tried from Mario Badescu, they’re a little more pricey and of course, you need to go online to buy them, but they really are the ultimate brand for blemish-prone skin.
This lotion aims to clear up blemishes and prevent future breakouts by gently disinfecting the skin and helping to decongest clogged pores, the mild exfoliating properties do wonders for the skin.
The light formula has a soft scent – we like to apply it with a cotton pad, sweeping it over the skin after cleansing as an extra step.
It can be used every day or a few times a week to ensure skin is clear. It doesn’t dry out the skin or leave it feeling tight or uncomfortable, and it helps to brighten the skin too, thanks to that gentle exfoliation. A lovely product if you find skin often looks congested and dull.
NUXE ANTI-IMPERFECTION CARE, £18.50
This is slightly higher in price than the other products we’ve selected, but we can assure you it’s worth every penny and more. NUXE are an incredible brand, they’re a French luxury skincare brand that cater for all skin types, and the products are very gentle yet effective.
This Anti-Imperfection Care is a lovely product, it helps to balance the skin and regulate oil – meaning that excess oil is absorbed but the skin is also soothed and hydrated.
It aims to purify the skin, helping blemishes to heal with it’s long list of natural ingredients. It feels soft and silky when applied, keeping the skin shine-free yet hydrated throughout the day.
Once applied, the skin’s texture is refined and pores are minimised – it’s a great base for makeup too. Don’t be put off by the slightly high price tag, it will soon help to clear up skin and keep blemishes and oil under control.
AVENE CLEANANCE MASK, £12.75
A mask applied once a week will do wonders for the complexion, whether it be prone to blemishes or not. This Cleanance mask really works to unclog pores and reduce excess sebum, it uses clay to dislodge impurities and also helps the skin to look bright and youthful.
It’s free of parabans and uses the brands own thermal water to infuse the complexion with goodness, so skin is also glowing and hydrated.
We like to use this once a week, usually on a Sunday night, to detox the skin and help to clear up any existing blemishes. It helps to decongest clogged pores and makes a huge difference to the overall look of the skin – expect a healthier complexion after just a few uses!
MARIO BADESCU DRYING LOTION, £14.50
This stuff is a saviour for when breakouts pop up, the lotion works in no time to soothe and reduce the size of irritations. Formulated with Calamine and Salicylic Acid to help clear up whiteheads overnight, the treatment only tackles the affected area – it doesn’t dry up or irritate the skin around it.
To use, pop a clean cotton bud in to the bottle and dip it in to the pink section of the two-phase formula (the clear liquid is just alcohol to stop it from drying out), and then apply to blemishes. It will quickly dry on the skin, so just head to bed and wake up in the morning to healthier skin.
This is a must if you regularly get whiteheads or other large spots – it’s not so effective on under the skin blemishes but it does help to take down the swelling we find.
